Pleasure [xenia simos]
as an installation artist,
my work deals with space
and our relationship to it
stemmed from interest in its emotive power,
i create physical spaces to viscerally evoke mental ones.
it is said that the simultaneous activation of every neurological pleasure point in our brain’s reward system is necessary to generate the sensation of euphoria.

most recently my work evolved into the set design of a film called
Birth of Pleasure [an adaptation of a movement piece inspired by Audre Lorde’s writings on eroticism, as well as the myth of Eros & Psyche]
a multifaceted feeling, so many of our experiences of pleasure seem subjective.
as part of my process, i turned inwards to my own thoughts and obsessions. what was my relationship to pleasure?
i connected to the sensual and visceral
~indulgence & self gratification~
and in that moment i felt shame;
shame of my own truth, for finding pleasure only through my body, but also in the form of escapism. my innate capacity for joy seemed suppressed to the superficiality of sacral indulgence.
as women, we have been taught to contempt our own erotic power and fulfillment. to experience ourselves fully, requires a belief that there is more to pleasure than sensation as well as a desire to use it as a lense for reassessing all the aspects of our lives.
the chance to create space for women-
to explore their deepest source of power and information
.
.
.
felt ethereal but vivid.
hidden and exposed,
contained and expanded
for when released from its constraints, pleasure “flows through and colors my life with a kind of energy that heightens and sensitizes and strengthens all my experience.”
