Blake Beckham is a choreographer and Director of the intrepid performance outfit, The Lucky Penny. Blake's newest major dance work, OneAnother, premieres August 4-7 in Atlanta. It is an investigation of twos, pairings, the intimate gestures that bind us, and the deeply felt urge to seek out match, mate and mirror. 

Clara Guyton is an emerging dance artist whose current research examines the confluence of choreographic and poetic forms. This summer, Clara joined the cast of OneAnother in the rehearsal studio to witness, document and reflect. From within the creative process, she gleaned the following glossary of terms.

absence: a habit.

connection:

i’m just trying to find an anchor.

constellation:

isn’t it strange how we look where the finger is pointing, instead of where it came from?

desire:

a natural disaster with dismantling properties.

            diptych:

                        to be above and below the sharp edge of a tidal spill.

empty:

i am here.

            you are there.

fragile:

            balancing on jaw and Time.

fragmentary evidence:

i am losing access to your hand

            bringing you to me.

intimacy:

you are unsticking

                        secret transitions built on bones.

isolation:

somewhere sometime we must have

            passed one another like coming and going trains

            with both of us looking the other way.

narrow miss:

i want.

                                    permanence.

u r g e n t:

            so.

            how do you love?

provoke:

please.

                        eliminate pause except when most necessary.

possess:

they say we are constantly falling.

            they say that nothing touches.

            they say there is not contact

                        only movement and change.

reckon:

reflect.

            rewrite.

            they are

            synonyms.

reflect:

how empty the space is between ______________.

refract:

you are unswallowing migratory things while carrying vacuous globes amid your fingertips.

seek:

numb after endless hours of learning to understand

what cannot be said.

tangle:

between wallflowers and a slate gray mirror, touch becomes defined by the blurriness of endings.

vulnerable:

            listen

                        how your heart pounds inside of me.
