museums [mostly elsewhere and in the summer][carley rickes]
Carly Rickels
This week I chose to focus on entries that took place in museums over the last two years. The majority of my museum documentaries were recorded over the summer, for the most part, out of Georgia.
A museum is an education. I like to traverse museums alone; to take my time pausing to draw or inquire from details.
When I was in Europe I regularly visited museums. I learned the amusement of being able to connect exhibitions through the familiarization of artists, styles, themes, and timelines.
Through museums I’ve grown an informal education of the arts’ role in history, politics, architecture, philosophy, etc, etc. Drawing and writing help me to solidify a moment or a scene or a painting. If i draw it then I’ve interacted with it and it can activate my memory later.
Sometimes I like the challenge of trying to make my lines look like someone else's. A museum feels like a safe space to learn from others. You have a direct source in front of you. It's like a lesson plan. You study your subject and then quiz yourself to represent it.
When something is regular
you get used to it
And then you teach yourself what to do with it
